Q: Why did you become a collaborative divorce lawyer?

A: My decision to become a collaborative divorce lawyer was driven by a desire to transform the traditional perception of divorce from a contentious battle to a process marked by mutual respect and cooperation. Having witnessed the emotional and financial strain of adversarial divorces, I was drawn to the collaborative approach's emphasis on open communication, problem-solving, and prioritizing the well-being of all parties involved, especially children. Collaborative divorce offers a compassionate path to resolution, aligning with my belief in fostering a more constructive approach to family law.

Q: What experience and skills do you have that make you a good collaborative divorce lawyer?

A: My background in social work, combined with extensive experience in family law and specialized training in collaborative divorce and mediation, enriches my approach to guiding families towards amicable resolutions. This expertise allows me to skillfully handle the emotional complexities inherent in divorce cases, aiding clients in crisis to move towards a constructive resolution. I strive to understand the holistic needs of each client, recognizing that every case is unique. This insight is particularly valuable in collaborative divorce, where the diversity of issues in a family requires customized, empathetic solutions. In collaborative settings, my ability to navigate sensitive emotional issues while maintaining a focus on equitable outcomes is enhanced by this blend of social work and legal acumen. I work closely with clients to explore all avenues, ensuring that the solutions we develop are not just legally sound, but also attuned to the specific needs and dynamics of their family.

Q: How would describe your collaborative style?

A: My collaborative style is centred around open dialogue, empathy, and a commitment to understanding the unique needs of each client and their family. I believe in fostering a cooperative environment where transparent and respectful communication is paramount. My approach involves actively listening to all parties, guiding clients through the negotiation process, and exploring flexible solutions that extend beyond strict legal parameters. By focusing on the well-being of any children involved and striving for equitable solutions, I aim to help couples reach a resolution that are not only legally sound but also emotionally and financially balanced.

Q: Why did you become a collaborative divorce lawyer?

A: In my first few years as a litigator in family law, I discovered that I had a strong desire to help my clients resolve their disputes and was able to successfully do so in most cases. I also learned that that most family law matters should be settled outside of court to avoid devastating financial and emotional consequences for the parties and their children.  When I was introduced to the collaborative process, I knew that it would be the perfect fit for me as a lawyer, and it has been. I have seen firsthand how effective this holistic interest-based approach to divorce is, and am honoured to have successfully guided many families through their separation as a Collaborative Divorce Lawyer.

Q: What experience and skills do you have that make you a good collaborative divorce lawyer?

A: I have completed extensive training in interest-based negotiation and mediation in order to become a certified Collaborative Divorce Lawyer and a Family Law Mediator. Since my accreditation in 2019, I have successfully represented clients in dozens of collaborative divorce files, including high net worth cases, complex files involving abuse and other challenging family dynamics, and cases requiring cultural sensitivity. With my litigation background, I can provide clients a window into what their case would look like in court, which they often find helpful in making decisions. I bring a wealth of knowledge and even more compassion to my cases.

Q: How would describe your collaborative style?

A: I have a heart-forward and practical approach. I care about each client and their case and put my energy into empowering them and ensuring they can move forward in a positive manner. I provide my clients with honest advice about their options and offer practical solutions. Having worked with many families, I have learned that taking the time to listen to and understand everyone’s interests is critical to reaching a resolution that serves both my client and the family as a whole.

Our Approach to Collaborative Divorce

Collaborative family law is a team-based, interdisciplinary approach where the divorcing couple and their respective family lawyers work together in negotiation meetings called four-way meetings. Unlike the traditional court-based approach to divorce, collaborative lawyers work with the separating couple toward the same goal - reaching a fair and durable settlement.
